View Full Version : Difference between a "sticky" address and a "dynamic" address

Hi,
Pipex are offering the opportunity to switch from a sticky address to
a dynamic address. Apparently one can only take the choice the one way
as it is non-reversible.
I would be grateful for an explaination of what the above means and
the advantages, if any.

Thanks

Norman

"Sticky" is know as Static IP address which means your connection address
will always be the same, good for hosting games etc bad if the wrong person
gets hold of it.

Example
198.201.2.3 all the time is sticky
198.201.2.3 or .4 or .5 or .67 etc etc etc is dynamic

Dynamic means each time you connect to the internet your address connection
will be different which for most is acceptable as most people who play games
join other servers anyway. It does not protect you 100% but you are a little
better than a Static IP person.

THE DECISION, IS YOURS !!!!! :-)

No, with PIPEX "sticky" means "almost always static" - it does *NOT*
mean static. If your "sticky" IP changes PIPEX are under no obligation
to change it back. Most people seem to have kept their sticky IPs for
months/years.

Not really that bad, it seems fairly obvious from the "sticky" and not
"stuck" (static) that it could change....

I have a sticky IP address with BT - right now I'm x.x.x.177, but my
last lease (which ended with a power failure) I was x.x.x.162 - which I
had held for a little under a month, despite occasional
short disconnections here and there.

It depends on the way your ISP configures their DHCP server.

Not as bad as top posting with a 24 line signature though.
