my DSL-2740R wireless router is not permanently displayed, (as I'd expect

I was thinking of switching my phone from BT to Primus Saver @£99/yr to
avoid the BT rental price hike, am I right in thinking that since they are
apparently just a reseller of BT's lines rather than LLU that my ADSL
connection wouldn't be affected? Their FAQs don't explicitly say anything.

I note that Primus are also offering 24Mb ADSL - is this just BT's offering
rebadged, and is it any good (I don't want throttling or shaping, I use
torrents etc. I only use about 10GB/month though).

Has any BT residential customer managed to get BT Connect on their
residential phone line? If not, was it painless swapping out to small
business?

I am looking at the pros/cons of getting a BT Connect connection with
a couple of static IP addresses and minutes to UK landlines included.
The BT Openworld residential packages don't include static IP or
multiple IP address options...
Thanks.

I've been suffering occasional but regular ADSL disconnects for a couple

I've been suffering occasional but regular ADSL disconnects for a couple
of weeks now, and the frequency of them has increased since some heavy
rain last Wednesday.

The symptoms are as follows:-.

Suddenly my router (Cisco AM200) will lose sync with the exchange, or
its sync speed will drop dramatically.
When I notice this happening I can hear crackles and whistling sounds on
the phone line.
Curiously if I switch off the router the whistling stops (but not the
crackling).

This led me to suspect the filter.
I changed the filter, but no improvement.

I changed the router but no improvement.

I have isolated the home's extension network and just have the filter
plugged directly into the master socket. (I've also tried replacing the
master socket, no luck). In one side of the filter is a phone, in the
other my router.

I attempted to report a line fault with BT, but of course owing to the
intermittent nature they say there is no fault.

The fault is most likely to occur between 19:00 and 22:00 hrs, but
evidence from my router logs suggest it also happens overnight, and
during the day.

Nothing in my set up/wiring has changed in the 7 years I've had ADSL,
and until this year the service has been rock steady. There was a
similar occurrence of this fault over a weekend about 6 months ago, but
that cleared itself.

Nominal values are as follows:-

Downstream Sync 2800 kb/s
Upstream Sync 544 kb/s
SNR 8-10 dB.

I've contacted my ISP, and they are reluctant to help, referring me back
to BT 151.

What is odd is the whistling noise, as I say it ceases the instant I
kill the router, but the crackling continues. Is it possible what I'm
hearing is my ADSL carrier hetrodyning with someone else's owing to a
short, partial short, or crossed pair ? Could the DSLAM be suspect. It's
an LLU service if that's got any significance ?

Comments welcome !!

A friend and I finally persuaded one of his neighbours to upgrade her
broadband. She was still paying for a Fixed Rate 2 Mb/s service which
was installed years ago, even though her exchange has been both 21CN'd
and FTTC'd.

So she went for BT Infinity, and it was installed a week ago. The
installer apparently said it might take a week for the speed to
stabilise, which surprised me.

Anyway, my friend popped in to her place over the Bank Holiday weekend,
and was disappointed to see speed tests returning about 7 Mb/s.
Checking the router stats, her sync speed is 8128 kb/s. OK for ADSL
Max, not very good for ADSL 2+, very poor for FTTC.

Something doesn't sound right. I'm wondering if the installer has
forgotten to do the break-out to fibre in the green cabinet, or some
equally daft mistake. Is there anything that could be misconfigured on
either the VDSL modem or the router ? Or should she just report it as
a fault ?

Crossposted to uk.telecom.broadband where they know
about these things. Well broadband, not sure about sarcasm
or irony.

The first thing to do is to see if you can find a fault on the voice
and then you can call BT directly. Do the automated self test.
They seem to want the phone off and the broadband off for
the test so you need a mobile or a friend or something like that.
Get someone to check that the outbound voice is OK.

I had a physical broadband fault recently and I was dreading
the ISP/BT merry-go-round but then I picked up the phone
(I normally never use it) and heard the most dreadful buzzing
racket. Relief all round.

Call to BT, job done. Well three days later:-((
Our agreement says we have three days to fix it and we won't
even look at it until then. I guess making all customers wait
for the three days puts three days worth of repair
costs in the bank gathering interest.

The numbers that are important if you have a line problem
are the DSL line behaviour ones.

Different routers have dirrerent means of access to these figures.

Here are mine:-

The first figure is Downstream the second upstream. If you view in a
fixed
width font it should all line up reasonably.

## Good line - today ##
Note:-
Reed-Solomon EC/Cells ratio
24168/14610417
24/14600
Say 1 in 6000.
Leakage Average BER: 0E-0 0E-0

## Bad line ##
Here the UPSTREAM was very unwell but the Downstream was less
affected.
Note sync speed of 64k upstream.
Downstream Reed-Solomon EC/Cells ratio 16/499
or 1/35 or so at a guess. This means that 1 in 35 downstream cells
(about 60 bytes each) was corrupted in transit and had to be
repaired. Repair is possible since each cell is sent three times
and corrupted cells can usually be fixed from the good ones.
Each cell is not really sent three times, Reed-solomon
error correction is used, but it works quite like that only better
and
a bit more compact.

Noise Margin: 4.0 dB 10.0 dB
Here is another set when it was working at full advertised
max sync speed. It is not quite there at present but it's not worth
worrying about for me.

Note:-
1797/66,780,345
1.7/66000

or about 1/40000 cells were Error Corrected on receipt.

As an aside -
28/66,000,000 cells were not recoverable - CRC errors
1 in about 2M
This is "very good" for normal IP network operation.
Modern fiber Gigabit Ethernet though will often do billions of
packets (say 100 cells worth each) without a single
error.

Just had a strange issue (solved now) ...

Noticed that I had lost internet connectivity, checked router and it had
ATM sync (2624 down and 832 up, about usual for here) but no PPP
session, asked it reconnect PPP a few times but it kept saying it
timed-out, did a soft reboot of the router, still the same, power-cycled
the router, still the same.

Decided to see if it would connect using BT's speedtest@startup_domain,
it connected first time, I immediately disconnected and reconnected to
my ISP (plusnet) and the PPP session came straight up - coincidence, or
does making a different connection clear something at the DSLAM end?
